While forecasters early Friday evening were predicting that the brunt of Hurricane Bertha would miss Maine, disaster relief workers were taking nothing for granted by preparing emergency shelter locations throughout the state. Forecasters at the National Weather Service in Gray early Friday evening were forecasting heavy rains Saturday with an average accumulation of three inches around the state accompanied by wind gusts of up to 40 mph or higher. As of 8 p.m. Friday night, no watches or warnings had been issued in Maine. Yet American Red Cross officials were taking no chances Friday night, announcing locations for families that may be evacuated from their homes if Bertha takes a turn for the worse.
