DEAR SUN SPOTS: My husband is looking for cubed yeast, not the dry powder. We can’t seem to find it anywhere in the stores. Thank you for all your help. — Karen, Hebron

ANSWER: Like so many products of any kind, you can find compressed fresh (cubed) yeast “cakes” on Amazon and walmart.com. If you are looking for it in local grocery stores, look in the refrigeration section near the butter because this yeast needs to be kept at cooler temperatures and used within two weeks. This type of yeast can also be frozen, but I’ve read that once it’s thawed, it needs to be used immediately.

Some grocery stores and natural food stores do stock fresh yeast cakes and if they don’t, try putting in a request with the store manager. Your local bakery may also have it and be willing to sell you some or share the information on how to obtain a portion for your special baking.

I’m curious to know why you would rather use fresh yeast than active dry yeast.

Readers, if you have seen fresh yeast cakes in stores, usually Red Star or Fleischmann’s brands, please let us know!

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Does anyone know what has happened to news anchor Cindy Williams? I haven’t seen her in a while. — Gerry, no town

ANSWER: I’m sure everyone has missed her. So many of us count on listening to and seeing these familiar people every day and when they are away, it can be a little discombobulating!

According to Cindy’s Facebook page, she had a second round of spinal surgery at the end of May and should be almost finished with her six-week recuperation period. Let’s continue to send our positive thoughts and prayers her way and hopefully you’ll be seeing her smiling face on Newscenter Maine WCSH Channel 6 very soon.
