OTISFIELD — Maine celebrated its 200th birthday in 2020, but have you ever wondered why Maine became the 23rd state or what people in Western Maine thought about the idea?

These questions and more will be answered at the 107th annual program at 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 25, at the Bell Hill Meetinghouse at 202 Bell Hill Road.

Noted local historian Jean Hankins plans to give an informal talk about how Maine became a state. What caused Mainers to take such a drastic step? Did folks in the area approve? Did they even care?

Hankins will address these questions in her usual witty and insightful way.

The Famous Meetinghouse Ice Cream Social will follow the talk with homemade hot fudge sauce, cookies and plenty of ice cream. The 1839 one-room schoolhouse will be open to visit. There is no charge for this event, but donations are gratefully accepted.

The meetinghouse is handicapped accessible.
