LEWISTON — Ron Potvin has announced his intention to run for Lewiston mayor.
According to a campaign announcement, he is running on the platform of “Unity, Education, and Solutions.”
Potvin serves as the Ward 6 School Committee member, and has served previously as a city councilor and School Committee member in Auburn before moving to Lewiston in 2014.
In 2017, Potvin was vice chair of the effort to defeat the Lewiston-Auburn merger referendum. He is semiretired, working as a correctional officer for the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office since 2001.
Potvin’s platform is based on what he feels are essentials to the success of Lewiston.
“Unity has to happen in our local community as we face a very divided world out there right now, and we have the people to keep our city above the fray if we have the communication,” he said. “My long history of being able to effectively work with conservatives and progressives puts me in a unique opportunity as mayor to move this city forward as one, and only as one Lewiston can we achieve success.”
Potvin also said he plans to address education tied to his work on the School Committee.
“We have done an enormous amount of work on the School Committee these past years, addressing administrative change and realignment, financial stability, services provided to ELL (English language learners) and special education, and educational support to the most needy students,” he said.
“We need to keep a focus on the progress made and continue that momentum moving forward to achieve the best results.”
The third plank in his platform focuses on solutions.
Potvin said Lewiston “has myriad challenges … and it is time for concrete action ranging from mill development, regional connectivity, drug addiction, homelessness, to tax assessment.”
