(From a Journal photo) This 1947 Ford owned by Dr. Theodore Sanford of Lewiston will be the pace car as the special United Fund race takes place at the Oxford Plains Speedway Aug. 21. It will be driven by the doctor, who is seen rubbing on a little polish, where it’s needed. With him is Larry Higgins of Auburn, who will drive a stock car sponsored by the Higgins Sports Center.

Nathan Gagnon of Lewiston learned first-hand about the laws of supply and demand when he visited the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) July 13-15 as a winner of the ninth annual Commodity Challenge, a high school economics competition sponsored by the CBOT. Gagne was allowed the opportunity to stand alongside traders at the opening of the CBOT’s grain markets. Gagne was one of a select group of 34 high school students chosen from more than 10,400 students competing from all across the United States. As a result, he was invited on an all-expenses-paid, three day trip to Chicago along with the other winners. He completed the project through live hogs under the guidance of his economics instructor, Joan Macri, who also attended.
