BETHEL — Bethel Town Manager Loretta Powers and Newry Town Administrator Amy Bernard met with waste management company Casella regarding their contract renewal, and to discuss state inspection on August 4.
In the initial contract, all four towns within the region, including Newry, Woodstock, Greenwood, and Bethel, were paying $29 a ton for three years, starting in 2017.
However, due to the rising cost of the industry, prices have gone up. The contract with Casella had originally ended in June 2021; however, both parties were not thinking in terms of a fiscal year. They decided that the contract was to be extended for one year, from July 1, 2021 into August 2022, providing hauling and disposal services. There are still many parts to be moved; however, in that one year, Casella will be more prepared to manage the transfer station.
Powers said she’d had the Bethel selectman get together earlier this month for a special meeting to discuss the contract with Casella.
