Last week’s Mystery Photo of the Presidential Inn at Poland Spring Resort in Poland was an easy guess for many. Quite a few included historical information and personal memories of the well-known landmark. Our winner, Wilma Davis Gordon of Gray, whose name was picked in a random drawing from all the correct entries, wrote in her entry:
“This most definitely is the annex of the original Poland Spring Resort in Poland Spring, Maine. I am a retired hairdresser. My first job was hairdressing, right out of cosmetology school, the summer resort season of 1961. I worked in the hair salon at Poland Spring Inn.
“The hair salon was located in this annex, located next to the last door in the right end of it. The barbershop was on the very end. The shops were on the ground floor, immediately to the right of this wooden overhead canopy. The hair salon was very antique, with shampoo boards at the sinks and old-fashioned hair dryers! Very interesting. The affluent guests, some from all over the world, loved the uniqueness of the dated salon!
“I was fortunate to be given the position as the manager after the original manager resigned to take another position. The salon concession owner, Marion Nedeau (she also owned and worked in the gift shop concession), had faith I could handle the job. I was not sure about it. I was 18 years old but so appreciative for the opportunity! It was a great experience for me!”
Wilma will receive a $20 Hannaford Supermarket gift card for being picked as the winner.
