The Maine Mariners fell to Worcester Railers 5-3 in their preseason opener at The Colisee in Lewiston.
Ross Olsson scored twice for the Railers and former University of Maine standout Nolan Vesey added a goal and an assist. Corbin Kaczperski (19 saves) and Justin Kapelmaster (16 saves) split time in goal for Worcester.
Drew Callin put the Railers up 1-0 midway through the first period.
Devon Paliani scored for the Mariners to tie the game at 1-1 with a little less than two minutes remaining in the first. About a minute later, Olsson put Worcester up 2-1 with a goal that was set up by Vesey.
Vesey’s goal midway through the second extended the Railers’ lead to 3-0.
Another former Black Bears player found the back of the net when Brendan Robbins cut the Mariners’ deficit to 3-2 with five-and-half minutes remaining in the second period. Matt Thomson and Martin set the goal up.
Matthew Santos tied the game at 3-3 for Maine early in the third period.
Midway through the third period, Olsson broke the tie with his second goal of the game.
Brent Beaudoin scored an empty-net goal to stretch Worcester’s lead to 5-3.
Goalie Callum Booth, who played in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, made 30 saves for the Mariners.
TRALMAKS ASSIGNED TO MARINERS
Forward Eduards Tralmaks, who played at the University of Maine from 2017-21, was assigned Friday morning to the Maine Mariners by the Providence Bruins of the American Hockey League.
In four seasons with the Black Bears, Tralmaks had 39 goals and 42 assists in 119 games.
After UMaine’s season ended last season, Tralmaks signed an AHL contract with the Providence Bruins. In eight games with the Bruins last season, he had two goals and two assists.
Tralmaks did not play for the Mariners on Friday night.
