The family that plays together, stays together, goes the adage. The Bernard family of Rumford has discovered a new way to play together: all four practice the martial arts — specifically jujitsu. And their efforts have earned them a Presidential Fitness Award. Olin E. Bernard, his wife, Francine, and their sons Olin A, age 11, and Matthew, age 10, are frequent visitors to the Rumford Community Center. There they are currently taking jujitsu lessons from instructor Jim Carey. The family took an interest in the martial arts on the urging of their youngest son, Matthew, now a fifth grader. For a year, the family took karate. Now it’s jujitsu, a form of Japanese hand to hand combat. All four family members have earned an orange belt which is an early level of proficiency in the sport.
