WALES — Residents voted to approve a series of local option liquor sales referendums Tuesday.
In total, 496 ballots were cast for the referendums. The vote will have little effect on the town, which approved liquor sales in 1968.
According to Sharon Siegel, town treasurer and deputy registrar of voters, Wales was notified by the Maine Bureau of Alcoholic Beverages and Lottery Operations that it must submit proof that the sale of liquor for on-premises or off-premises consumption has been authorized by residents by July 1, 2022, as required by state law.
Siegel said the town has been unable to find evidence of the 1968 vote and expects it was lost in a fire that destroyed much of the town’s historical records in 1971, so it was decided to hold another vote.
There are no current licenses for the sale of liquor in the town that are affected, Siegel said.
The results are as follows:
• Question 1: Sale of liquor for consumption on the premises on days other than Sunday: 372 yes, 119 no.
• Question 2: Sale of malt liquor and wine for consumption off the premises on days other than Sunday: 365 yes, 124 no.
• Question 3: Sale of liquor for consumption on the premises on Sundays: 332 yes, 156 no.
• Question 4: Sale of malt liquor and wine for consumption off the premises on Sundays: 334 yes, 153 no.
• Question 5: Sale of spirits and fortified wine for consumption off the premises on days other than Sundays: 372 yes, 116 no.
