100 Years Ago: 1921
Council 106, K. of C., will stage a minstrel show, to be followed by a dance, at City Hall January 5th. The local Knights of Columbus are fortunate in counting amongst their members many who are possessed of unusual talent In this direction, thus assuring beforehand the success of the entertainment. Rehearsals are to begin Sunday afternoon, under the direction of Coach Bernadette Moreau of Portland, a lady who has been very successful throughout the state in putting on productions of this kind. There are many in Lewiston and Auburn who retain a place in their hearts for the old-time minstrel shows.
50 Years Ago: 1971
The construction of a large addition to the Maine Shawnee Step Co.. at 1622 Minot Ave., Auburn got underway today. Richard Snowe, president of the firm, said the 48- by 120-foot concrete structure should be completed in about two months. Footings were being poured today. Snowe said the new addition, to be attached to the present wooden structure, would be uniframe-type made from precast concrete. It will cost an estimated $28,000. According to Snowe the addition is necessary because of increased business. The firm makes concrete. decorative steps. Snowe said when the structure is completed, he anticipates the workforce will be doubled, as will production. The addition will house new forms and molds for pouring the concrete used in making the steps.
25 Years Ago: 1996
The Fryeburg Historical Society will meet Tuesday, Dec. 3 at the American Legion Hall on Bradley Street. The meeting will begin at 7 pm with a brief business meeting, followed by guest speaker, Martin Engstrom who will give a slide program and talk on Mount Washington. Refreshments will be served and the public is invited to attend.
