LEWISTON — A water main pipe broke that broke Thursday in the area of Dunkin’ at 1124 Lisbon St. was expected to be repaired by late evening, an official said.
Nathan Landry, operations manager for the water and sewer division of the Department of Public Works, said the leak was discovered about 3 a.m.
A 15-foot-long split in the bottom of a 14-inch water main is being replaced with a new section of pipe about 18 feet long, Landry said.
The cause of the break is unknown, but Landry said the pipe was old and the incident is not unusual. “Similar leaks happen about once a year,” he said. “And it’s always a big mess like this.”
Landry said the repair likely would take until 8:30 p.m. or possibly 10:30 p.m. Thursday to complete.
