AUBURN — The Twin City Thunder took advantage of the South Shore Kings’ penalties and earned a 6-0 win in a USPHL National Collegiate Development Conference game Saturday at Norway Savings Bank Arena.
“It started out with being disciplined,” Thunder coach Dan Hodge said. “We played disciplined hockey in our system and (South Shore) took some penalties and we capitalized. We had a strong game.”
The Kings went shorthanded nine times, and the Thunder (12-10-1, 25 points) capitalized with four power-play goals.
Lewiston native Dom Chasse had two goals and an assist. Trace Norwell also scored two goals. Goalie Dana Couture made 16 saves.
“What was working well was communication with my linemates,” Chasse said. “When you communicate, the game is a lot easier. We communicated, and we got things done.”
Matt Cole opened the scoring with about five minutes remaining in the first period to give the Thunder a 1-0 lead.
Cole then set up Chasse’s first goal with under a minute remaining in the first period, and Twin City took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.
The Thunder’s power play started to warm up midway through the second period, and forward Tyler Healey scored his fifth goal of the year to stretch the lead to 3-0. Linemate Tristan Rand and defenseman Ben Monson had the assists.
Hodge said that Twin City has made power play personnel changes recently.
“We have been working on it the last couple of weeks here and trying to make different adjustments,” Hodge said. “We put different players on it, and it’s working, it’s clicking.”
Chasse scored the second Thunder power-play goal with eight minutes remaining in the second period for a 4-0 lead. Cole and Stitz recorded their second assists of the game.
“We get a lot of confidence (scoring on the power play), I think it brings the team up,” Chasse said.
Norwell scored a power-play goal with about five and half minutes remaining in the second period. Healey had the assist.
Norwell scored his second power-play goal in the third period, giving the Thunder a 6-0 lead.
Chace Hale made 19 saves for the Kings (13-9-1, 27 points).
