NEWRY — Rescue crews from several departments were called out Thursday afternoon to the Old Speck Trail at Grafton Notch when a hiker reported feeling dizzy.
Oxford County Sheriff’s deputies went to the area at about 4 p.m. along with firefighters and medics from Bethel and Newry when it was reported that the hiker may be suffering from hypothermia. The hiker was with a companion, according to early reports.
The Maine Warden Service was called to the scene and later, Woodstock and Greenwood firefighters were sent to the area. An early request for air transport was canceled.
At about 5:30 p.m., it was was reported that the two hikers were about an hour into the woods and that they were walking back to the trail head. Newry firefighters entered the woods and were expected to meet the hikers along the trail.
The trail is off Bear River Road in Newry. The temperature at sundown in the area Thursday was 10 degrees and dropping.
