CARRABASSETT VALLEY — Emma Charles dominated her race, and her Mt. Blue team followed suit.
The Cougars claimed nine of the top 10 finishes in the KVAC Nordic ski championships classical race Thursday at Sugarloaf, giving Mt. Blue (794 points) a 41-point advantage over second-place Maranacook heading into Saturday’s freestyle race.
Charles finished the course in 18:52.1, easily distancing herself from runner-up and teammate Brynne Robbins (20:39.1). Only Edward Little’s Katherine Garcia in fifth broke up Mt. Blue’s top-10 stranglehold.
The Mt. Blue boys are also in first place after the classical races, with 783 points to second-place Leavitt’s 746. Carson Zundel was the race-winner for the Cougars, crossing the line in 18:01.9, beating out runner-up Felix Battle of Brunswick (18:08.1). Logan Ouellette was Leavitt’s top finisher in fourth.
On the MVC side, also contested at Sugarloaf on Thursday, Spruce Mountain’s Abrahm Geissinger won the boys race in a time of 17:15.1, just ahead of Mt. Abram’s Alex Hemingway (17:17.0). Hemingway’s Roadrunners team sits in first after the day one, with 780 points to second-place Orono’s 778.
The Red Riots girls team leads after the classical, with Ruth White winning the individual race in a time of 20:37.1. Mt. Abram’s Emily Kidd was second in a time of 23:57.4. The Roadunners are in the runner-up position but trail Orono by a big margin, 786 to 581.
BOYS BASKETBALL
RANGELEY 65, PINE TREE ACADEMY 36: Boden Washington poured in 28 points as the Lakers (3-10) downed the Breakers (7-11) in Rangeley.
Anthony Whittier added 15 points and Chase Carmichael had 10 for Rangeley.
Silas Yeaton paced Pine Tree with 15 points.
ST. DOMINIC 84, ISLEBORO 27: Gabe Carey scored a game-high 15 points for a Saints (13-5) team that had 15 different scorers in a win over the Eagles (7-6) in Auburn.
Ayden Rand added 13 points for St. Dom’s.
Logan Burns led Isleboro with eight points.
MONMOUTH ACADEMY 63, OAK HILL 33: Hunter Frost led the Mustangs (10-4) with 16 points in a runaway win over the Raiders (8-8) in Wales.
Sammy Calder added 14 points, Manny Calder 12 and Gavin Willet1 10 for Monmouth, which led 20-6 after one quarter and 34-7 at halftime.
Ramon Spearman scored a team-high nine points for Oak Hill, and Caden Thompson and Tiger Hopkins dropped in six apiece.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
HALL-DALE 61, MOUNTAIN VALLEY 36: KJ Greenhalgh led four players in double figures with 14 points as the Bulldogs rolled to the Mountain Valley Conference victory in Farmingdale.
Hayden Madore scored 12 while KK Willis and Amanda Trepenier each added 11 for the Bulldogs.
Autumn Freeman and Emily Richard each scored 10 points to pace the Falcons.
KENTS HILL 53, MONMOUTH 35: Rose Jenkins led a balanced scoring attack with 16 points as the Huskies earned the Class C South win in Kents Hill.
Regina Sabirova added 14 points for Kents Hill (9-4) while alanna Batchelder scored in 11.
Monmouth (3-10) was led by Holly Hunt with a game-high 23 points.
WINTHROP 64, MADISON 53: Madeline Wagner scored a game-high 21 points, including 14 free throws, in the Ramblers’ (12-3) MVC win over the Bulldogs (10-7) in Winthrop.
Maddie Perkins and Lydia Rice added 17 and 15 points, respectively, for Winthrop.
Raegan Cowan and Lillian Levesque scored 10 points apiece to lead Madison.
RANGELEY 64, PINE TREE ACADEMY 33: Winnie LaRochelle poured in 29 points and went 7-for-9 at the free-throw line in the Lakers’ (10-3) win over the Breakers (8-10) in Rangeley
Rangeley’s Emily Eastlack contributed 15 points and Cheyanne Avery scored 11.
For Pine Tree, Paige Tyson scored 15 points and Ishell Maitland had 13.
CARRABEC 51, DIRIGO 40: Cheyenne Cahill tossed in the game-high 21 points and teammate Linda Hamiton turned in a 16-point performance in the Cobras MVC win in Dixfield.
Carrabec (13-2) led 29-23 at halftime. Alyvia Perreault scored 13 points and knocked down three 3-pointers for Dirigo (10-8).
OXFORD HILLS 45, HAMPDEN ACADEMY 35: Sierra Carson led the Vikings (16-2) with 19 points in the win over the Broncos (13-5) in Paris.
Brooklyn Alexander added seven points in the win.
Camryn Neal, Lucy Wiles and Emma Haskell each had eight points to lead Hampden Academy.
BOYS HOCKEY
LEAVITT/GRAY-NG/OAK HILL/POLAND 1, GREELY 0: Reese Collins pounced on a rebound at the top of the crease and knocked it in midway through the second period to lift Leavitt/Gray-NG/Oak Hill/Poland (8-5-1) over Greely (9-3) at Norway Savings Bank Arena in Auburn.
Vinnie Lupardo made 27 saves for the shutout, surviving a flurry in the final minute and a half after the Rangers pulled goalie Keji Wiessner, who stopped 16 shots.
