Gov. Janet Mills’ proposal to return surplus revenue is a slap in the face to tax-paying Mainers who make more than $75,000.

Choosing only taxpayers under that limit is discriminatory. To say that workers making over $75,000 are not affected by rising costs is truly one-sided. Any surplus should go to all taxpaying Mainers regardless of income.

If she’s going to have a limit, then maybe workers should be exempt from paying taxes over the $75,000 of income. If the state forecast is to have surpluses, then it’s time to lower Maine workers’ tax burden. The same goes with the hazard payments that went out.

I wonder why Mainers, who made more than $75,000, who were exposed to the same hazards as lower income Mainers, were not included in hazard payouts? It’s time to stop penalizing Mainers based on the income.
