I am writing to call attention to the proposed zoning changes in Auburn. I am particularly concerned about the one that includes the Court Street and Western Avenue areas.
Proposed changes would allow up to 16 units in each building as opposed to the current rule that allows three per building. Changes would also allow small businesses, office buildings and other commercial establishments in that area as well.
My major concern is traffic. Both major streets are two-lane streets with very few turning lanes. The new Edward Little High School construction is already having an enormous impact on traffic. More commercial buildings would result in more cars and more traffic. More vehicles would be entering and exiting the streets. I have not heard this addressed or a plan to deal with it.
The zoning changes are being made quickly. Only property owners have to be informed. The Planning Board is holding hearings right now so it can make a recommendation to the City Council. The City Council will make the final decision, but it often relies on the Planning Board’s recommendation.
The next council meeting is Monday, March 21. People can get more information by attending the meeting, checking the City of Auburn website or contacting their city councilor.
