Big zoning changes are being recommended that would change more than 1,687 acres of residential neighborhoods in Auburn.The Planning Board is recommending to the Auburn City Council major zoning changes in residential neighborhoods in the center of Auburn. Included are neighborhoods in the area of Lake Street, Poland Road, Fairview Avenue, Nottingham Road, near the middle school and high school, outer Lake Street, all streets off Gamage Avenue, and all neighborhoods from Lake Auburn Avenue to Mt. Auburn Avenue.These changes include 1) allowing 16 dwelling units per acre, 2) three and half-story apartment buildings, 3) more than 20 different businesses, including restaurants with 30 or more seats, medical and dental clinics, and marijuana retail stores, to name just a few.These and other recommended changes would significantly change the character of well-established neighborhoods of two-story, single and two-family homes. Homes where families have raised their children for decades, sent their children to neighborhood schools, and lived in neighborhoods with quiet and safe streets.On Monday, March 21, the City Council is due to act on the adoption of these major zoning changes. If residents want to protect the homes they have invested in for years, now is the time to have their voices heard. They should call, text or email their city councilors, (contact information is on the city website) and attend the City Council meeting.Once the zoning changes are approved by the City Council, it will be too late.
