LEWISTON — Bates College played mistake-free softball across both games of a doubleheader, which the Bobcats won 5-0 and 3-1 against visiting Thomas College on Wednesday at Lafayette Street Field.
The Bobcats (5-8) didn’t make an error in either of the seven-inning games.
The Bates bats got hot in the middle of the first game, plating three runs in the fourth to round out the scoring in the 5-0 win. Eliza McNulty opened the scoring in the fourth by coming home on a wild pitch. Sarah Cooke then singled in the other two runs.
McNulty drove in the first run of the game with a single in the second. In the third inning, Lindsey Kim reached on an error, which allowed Cooke to score.
Maggie Hillwig pitched the complete-game shutout, allowing just two hits and three walks while striking out five.
In the second game, Bates held just a 1-0 lead until plating two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Cameron Jones-McNally drove in both runs with a single to center, then advanced to second on an error.
Cooke scored the first run of the game in the third thanks to Kennedy Ishii reaching on an error.
Kelsey Currier singled home the Terriers’ (5-11) lone run of the doubleheader with two outs in the top of the seventh to make the second game interesting. But Danielle Polirer shut the door by inducing a game-ending groundout.
Polirer pitched a complete game, scattering five hits and three walks while striking out eight.
UMF DROPS DOUBLEHEADER TO SALEM ST.: The Beavers (1-12) scored two runs in each game of a doubleheader (10-2, 6-2), but couldn’t quiet the Vikings’ (3-14) bats at Prescott Field in Farmington.
In the first game, Salem State scored four runs in the first and two apiece in the second and third innings to jump out to a big lead.
University of Maine at Farmington scored both its runs in the bottom of the first, on a two-run single by Oxford Hills grad Christa Allen that scored Lisbon grad Kiley Merritt and Leah Stevens. Merritt paced UMF’s nine-hit attack with three singles.
The Vikings opened the second game with two runs in the top of the first, and the Beavers answered with two of their own in the bottom half. Allen homered to center, which also drove in Merritt. Gray-New Gloucester grad Chelsea Davis led the Beavers with two hits.
Maddie Souza pitched the first three innings for UMaine-Farmington, allowing three runs on six hits and one walk, before being relieved by Carleigh Schievink, who was tagged for three more runs in the fourth.
BASEBALL
BATES 10, THOMAS 9: The Bobcats (4-14) rallied to take the lead in the top of the seventh, then held off the Terriers’ (4-14) own comeback attempt to take the non-conference clash in Waterville.
Tyler Attal and Drew Fallon had three hits and three runs each for Bates, and Ben Genser drove in three runs.
DJ Cagnina and Jason Bartlett had three hits apiece for Thomas, with Bartlett and Kyle Gleason each collecting three RBIs.
MEN’S LACROSSE
BOWDOIN 16, BATES 11: The Polar Bears (10-0, 6-0 NESCAC) pulled past the Bobcats (0-9, 0-6) in the first half in Lewiston.
Bowdoin outscored Bates 6-2 in the first quarter and 4-1 in the second to take a 10-3 lead into halftime.
Patrick Fitzgerald paced the Polar Bears with four goals. Will Byrne added three and Avery Kirby had two.
The Bobcats finished strong, netting six goals in the fourth, but their deficit was too much to overcome.
Will Schinabeck, Malcolm Klingbeil and Jack Daoust each scored twice to lead Bates.
WOMEN’S LACROSSE
BOWDOIN 18, BATES 10: Fiona Bundy’s five goals propelled the Polars Bears (8-3, 3-3 NESCAC) past the Bobcats (2-7, 0-6) in Brunswick.
Colleen McAloon contributed three goals to Bowdoin’s win, while Sophia Sudano, Annabelle Gersch and Peyton Mulhern scored two apiece. Olivia Coveney led the Polar Bears with three assists, and Gersch had two.
Dana Swartz paced Bates with four goals. Chloe Robinson added two, and Sophie Scola, Trish Balser, Annie Lowenstein and Zoe Knauss each scored one.
THOMAS 15, UMF 8: University of Maine at Farmington fell behind in the second quarter and couldn’t recover in a loss to Thomas College at Smith Field in Waterville.
The Beavers (1-8) took a 2-1 lead with 6:46 left in the first quarter on back-to-back goals by Kristina Moody, but the Terriers’ (4-6) Mary LaRochelle scored the first of her game-high five goals 40 seconds later to tie it. LaRochelle scored less than three minutes later to give Thomas a 3-2 lead after one quarter.
Azure Illiano scored a man-up goal for UMaine-Farmington to tie the game early in the second quarter, but Lauren Bartlett and Anna Chadwick each scored goals to give the Terriers a lead they didn’t relinquish. LaRochelle scored two more goals to help give Thomas a 9-4 halftime lead.
Moody led the Beavers with three goals, and Chadwick was right behind LaRochelle with four.
Maddy TenKate made 16 saves for UMaine-Farmington, while Lizzy Gotay stopped 10 shots for Thomas.
