People interested in seeing that another Olde Home Day Celebration happens for 2022 are invited to a meeting of the committee which will take place tonight at 6 p.m. in the Town Hall. The group is looking for volunteers to head up two activities: the dunk tank and corn hole contest. If you can’t attend this meeting, get in touch with Joe Luce.
There will be an informational meeting at the Town Hall on Tuesday, April 26 at 6 p.m. This meeting will inform interested persons about several items to be voted on at the annual Town Meeting on June 11. These informational meetings are very helpful in getting knowledge about new projects to the public, and thus having voters at the Town Meeting already aware of the pros and cons, which keeps the meeting from getting bogged down in explanations. One of the proposals coming from the Selectman’s Office would be changing the Historical Society to an organization under town government much like the library’s mode of operation. This would include a board of directors.
For the first time, at least in my memory, there are multiple candidates for one seat on the Board of Selectmen and they include: Joe Luce, who is seeking a second term, Kevin Scott, Toby Wells, and Doug Averill. Candidates for School Director are Lora Owings and Katherine McGaughy.
The Library Board of Directors has signed a contract with Fletcher Electric to install a generator at the library building on Church Street.
I heard the Town Clock peal for the first time in months the other day, but haven’t heard it since. It has been missed over the past few months.
In pursuit of a public bathroom in the community, The Toilet Taskers, a name given to themselves by Peg Madigan, after receiving proposed prices, have scaled down the project from two bathrooms to one — and that one will be unisex and handicap accessible. This reminds me of a notation in the minutes of the First Congregational Church records when in the late 1800s the parsonage, now a private home, was being built. The discussion was about the outhouse in the barn — should it be a one-holer or a two-holer? I guess some things never change.
One of the things that shouldn’t change is the Summer Concert Series, and I’m glad to report that Pete Coolidge has just distributed the schedule for 2022. The first concert will be on June 3 and feature the Acoustipalians, who will also close the series on Aug. 23. Other groups appearing are the Cobblestones, Sandy River Ramblers, Salty Dog, Randy Messineo, and the Shadagee Ramblers. The concerts begin at 6 p.m., rain or shine on the common.
After some time, a new attendant for the Transfer Station has been hired. His first name is Mike and I met him on Saturday while taking my weekly trip down there.
