COLLEGE SOFTBALL
MERRILL EARNS HONOR: Sophomore Lauren Merrill of the University of Southern Maine Huskies has been selected as the Little East Conference Pitcher of the Week.
The Oxford Hills graduate went going 4-0 with two shutouts and a 0.30 earned run average. Over 23 innings pitched, Merrill held opposing batters to six hits and a .078 batting average.
Merrill is 10-5 this season and has pitched a team-high 99.0 innings. She has three shutouts and a 2.33 earned run average while holding opponents to a .204 batting average.
UMF’S ALLEN RECOGNIZED: The North Atlantic Conference has chosen UMaine-Farmington freshman Christa Allen as the rookie of the week.
In six games last week, Allen batted .500 (9-for-18) and helped the Beavers to a 4-2 record. Among her nine hits were four doubles and a home run — a two-run homer in the seventh inning that gave UMF a walk-off win over UMaine-Presque Isle on Sunday.
Allen also drove in five runs and scored four. She posted a .571 on-base percentage, and a .889 slugging percentage.
COLLEGE TRACK AND FIELD
UMF DUO HONORED: UMaine-Farmington’s Alixx Canwell has been named North Atlantic Conference field athlete of the week and teammate Henry Scheff is the conference’s rook of the week.
Canwell of Chelsea finished third in the hammer throw with a distance of 150 feet, 6 inches at Saturday’s Maine State Classic at Bates College. That throw is a personal best for Canwell and qualifies him for the Division III New England Outdoor Track & Field Championships in May.
Scheff of Blue Hill had UMaine-Farmington’s top individual finish by place at the Maine State Classic, placing second in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.73 seconds, which is a qualifying time for the Division III New England Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
