The Norway Planning Board held a public hearing on April 14 concerning the completed application of Left Turn Enterprises to develop the former cannery and lumber mill on the Lake Road into a multi-use entertainment venue.
The applicants hired the state’s preeminent site engineering firm to design the technical aspects, including addressing surface runoff and significant remedial cleanup of contaminants, which were presented in detail.
Attendees spoke in favor and opposition, mentioning potential economic and cultural benefits, as well as concerns about noise and impacts on the lake. One complaint by a neighboring homeowner stated that the property would be best used for other purposes, and when their lot was purchased, the mill site was dormant.
Since these parcels were on the market for years, if other uses were so much more appropriate, why did others not take the initiative?
Norway’s land-use documents contain performance standards for the board to use in determining whether to grant the required permits for Lakeside Norway to proceed.
None of these mandates halt a project based upon what ‘shoulda/coulda’ been.
