MEN’S TRACK AND FIELD
BATES ATHLETES SHINE: Junior Liam Byrne took home first place in the hammer throw and senior captain Liam Evans won the decathlon, highlighting the first two days of the New England Division III Outdoor Men’s Track and Field Championships for the Bobcats in Williamstown, Massachusetts.
Byrne got his meet off to a strong start on Friday, winning the hammer throw with a personal record heave of 55.71 meters.
Over the course of two days, Evans recorded a personal record of 6,167 points in the decathlon and moved into sixth place on the Bates all-time performance list in the event. He won four of the 10 events, the 1,500 meters (4:38.06), javelin (45.95 meters), pole vault (4.40 meters), and discus (30.42 meters). He also finished second in the 400-meter dash (52.15 seconds) and third in the shot put (10.42 meters).
COLLEGE BASEBALL
UMASS LOWELL 5, MAINE 2: Joshua Becker allowed two runs on seven hits, striking out five and walking two in eight innings as the Riverhawks (20-25, 10-13 America East) beat Maine (24-15, 20-3) to end the Black Bears’ 14-game winning streak, in Lowell, Massachusetts.
Jacob Humphrey was 2 for 3 with a run scored and two RBI for UMass Lowell.
Connor Goodman and Quinn McDaniel each had two hits and an RBI for Maine.
COLLEGE SOFTBALL
HARTFORD 6, MAINE 2: Julianna Kocenski hit a three-run home run in the first inning as the Hawks (16-30, 5-13 America East) beat the Black Bears (8-35, 4-12) in West Hartford, Connecticut.
Grace McGouldrick scored on a sac fly by Izzy Nieblas in the first inning and Katie Jo Moery scored in the second for Maine.
