RUMFORD — A dozen women Wednesday participated in the 29th annual National Senior Health & Fitness Day, the nation’s largest older adult health and wellness event.
The women did a one-mile walk at the Hosmer Complex, joining more than 100,000 expected to participate at 1,000-plus locations across the country, according to the National Senior Health & Fitness Day website.
Mitzi Sequoia of Rumford said she tried for two years to hold the event but was prohibited by the pandemic.
It was sponsored by the River Valley Healthy Communities Coalition and Maine West, a partnership of local and regional organizations working across the economic, education, health and conservation sectors to position rural western Maine communities as viable and attractive places to live, work, do business and raise families.
Sequoia said Wednesday’s walk was the kickoff for this year’s Wellness Walks for those 50 and older at the Hosmer Field track. The two six-week sessions are Wednesdays at 5 p.m. June 1 to July 6 and Sept. 7 to Oct. 12.
Water, snacks and sunscreen will be provided; walkers are invited to bring a hat and water bottle and wear comfortable shoes.
