COLLEGES
Nyagoa Bayak of Westbrook qualified for the NCAA Division I track and field championships in the high jump by clearing four heights without a miss Saturday at the East Regional in Bloomington, Indiana.
Bayak, a sophomore at Louisiana State, was one of 11 women who were successful at 6 feet, 1/2 inch. Already a two-time All-American indoors, Bayak advances to the championship meet June 8-11 at the University of Oregon’s Hayward Field.
GOLF: Florida State sophomore Cole Anderson of Camden shot a 2-over 72 in the second round of the NCAA Division I championship in Scottsdale, Arizona, and was at 3 over for the tournament, six strokes behind leader Cole Sherwood of Vanderbilt with two rounds remaining in the individual competition.
Anderson bogeyed his final two holes to drop into a tie for 17th place.
BASEBALL
EASTERN LEAGUE: Jeisson Rosario drove in three runs against his former team, and Mickey Gasper and Jesus Bastides each hit a two-run homer to lead the Somerset Patriots to a 9-6 win against the Portland Sea Dogs at Hadlock Field.
Christian Koss hit a three-run homer and Izzy Wilson belted a two-run shot for the Sea Dogs. Chris Murphy took the loss, allowing four runs on six hits and four walks over five innings.
GOLF
PGA: Scottie Scheffler shot a 2-under 68 with wind gusts of around 30 mph and temperatures in the upper-90s at the Charles Schwab Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas, opening a two-stroke lead.
Scheffler was at 11-under overall. Brendon Todd (65) and Scott Stallings (70) were tied for second.
SENIOR PGA: Stephen Ames shot a 4-under 67 to take a two-stroke lead over fellow Canadian Mike Weir and 64-year-old Bernhard Langer into the final round of the Senior PGA Championship in Benton Harbor, Michigan.
Ames had a 12-under 202 total.
Weir and Langer each shot 67.
EUROPEAN TOUR: England’s Matt Wallace and France’s Victor Perez shared the lead at 10 under after the third round of the Dutch Open in Cromvoirt, Netherlands, where two shots separated the top nine.
Wallace shot 2-under 70 and Perez 3-under 69. They were one stroke ahead of Ryan Fox (70), Guido Migliozzi (70), Sebastian Soderberg (68) and Scott Hend (68).
Third-round leader Ricardo Gouveia, seeking his first European tour title, dropped into a share of seventh place after carding a 74.
AUTO RACING
CUP SERIES: Denny Hamlin will start on the pole Sunday for the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway, while Kyle Larson, the defending Cup Series champion, will begin 36th after crashing in practice.
Hamlin turned a lap of 183.68 mph for his first pole of the year and the 34th of his Cup Series career. Hamlin has never won at Charlotte.
Toyotas claimed the top four spots in qualifying.
XFINITY: Josh Berry outdueled teammate Justin Allgaier to give JR Motorsports its first win at Charlotte Motor Speedway in the Xfinity Series.
Berry took the lead with 22 laps to go when Allgaier got loose and brushed the outside wall in Turn 1. Berry slowly pulled away and won by more than 18 seconds, while Allgaier finished seventh after experiencing a leaky tire.
Ty Gibbs finished second and pole sitter Sam Mayer was third.
SOCCER
MLS: Gustavo Bou converted a penalty kick for New England in the 75th minute, but Philadelphia’s Mikael Uhre answered two minutes later as the Revolution and Union played to a 1-1 draw in Foxborough, Massachusetts.
ENGLAND: The sale of Premier League club Chelsea is expected to be completed Monday after a “final and definitive” agreement was reached with a consortium fronted by Los Angeles Dodgers part-owner Todd Boehly.
The club said that “a final and definitive agreement was entered into (Friday) night” to sell to the Boehly and Clearlake Capital consortium. The price is 2.5 billion pounds ($3.2 billion) – the highest ever for a sports team.
HOCKEY
WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS: Defenseman Miro Heiskanen had a goal and two assists and Finland beat the United States 4-3 in Tampere, Finland, to set up its third straight final against Canada.
Dylan Cozens scored twice in Canada’s 6-1 victory over the Czech Republic. Finland beat Canada in the 2019 final in Slovakia, and Canada topped the Finns last year in Latvia.
BASKETBALL
WNBA: A’ja Wilson had 22 points and 16 rebounds, Dearica Hamby added 14 points and 12 rebounds, and visiting Las Vegas beat the defending-champion Chicago Sky, 83-76, for the Aces’ sixth consecutive win.
CYCLING
GIRO D’ITALIA: Jai Hindley stormed into the overall lead on the fearsome Marmolada climb with one day left in the three-week race.
A mighty mountainous stage was won by Alessandro Covi for his first grand tour victory following a long solo attack.
Race favorite Richard Carapaz, the 2019 champion and Olympic gold medalist in Tokyo, lost his three-second lead over Hindley in the overall standings when he cracked inside the final three kilometers of the penultimate stage.
Hindley will take an advantage of 1 minute, 25 seconds into Sunday’s individual time trial in Verona.
