BINGHAM — One person was injured over the weekend when two masked men stormed into a home on Main Street looking for another person, the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday.
The homeowner, a woman and a man were inside the home Sunday when the home invasion occurred, sheriff’s Chief Deputy Michael Mitchell said. The masked men, one armed with a handgun and the other with a rifle, were looking for the man who was hiding in a rear bedroom, Mitchell said.
The homeowner told the armed men to leave before the confrontation turned physical, he said. The handgun fired, sending a bullet into the floor, and it’s not clear if the discharge was intentional or accidental.
The intruder with the rifle used the rear of it to strike the homeowner in the face, knocking out a couple of teeth, Mitchell said.
The suspects left the home without finding the man who was hiding. Mitchell said it’s not yet clear why the suspects were searching for that man, who is not cooperating with the investigation. The man is not from the Bingham area and had been staying with the homeowner, Mitchell said.
Deputies were continuing to search Wednesday for the armed men, he said. They had entered the home through a side door, rather than the front door, indicating they were familiar with the home, he said.
