Zépherin Lessard, who was born on April 5, 1893, stands in his Royal Canadian Army uniform in this photo taken around 1918. Most French Canadians did not enlist in Canada’s armed forces because it was dominated by English-speaking officers. Lessard’s enlistment in the Royal Canadian Army was a result of the Conscription Act. While visiting relatives in Canada, in 1917, Lessard, a resident of Lewiston but a Canadian by birth, was drafted into the Canadian army. This photo was submitted by Madeleine Roy. Lessard was a brother to her mother, Aurore Lessard. Franco Fridays is a recurring feature offering a photo from the Franco-American Collection at the University of Southern Maine’s Lewiston-Auburn College in Lewiston.
