SABATTUS — A double-wide trailer at 31 Phelan St. was destroyed in a fire early Friday morning.
Fire crews responded to the scene and began combatting the fire shortly after 1 a.m. Before crews arrived, an on-call firefighter saw visible smoke and flames from the parking lot of the Central Fire Station, according to a press release from the Sabattus Fire Department.
The single-story, single-family dwelling was completely involved in flames and had collapsed in on itself before crews arrived at the scene. Crews from Lewiston, Wales and Lisbon assisted at the scene and minimized damage to a garage that had also caught fire. Crews were able to get the fire under control without much interior damage to the garage.
Crews couldn’t conduct interior firefighting operations due to the length of time the building burned before fire crews were notified, the press release stated. Firefighters were able to contain the blaze by 1:44 a.m. and units cleared the scene around 4 a.m. The building is considered a complete loss.
The Office of State Fire Marshal was contacted to complete an investigation due to the delay in notification of the fire and the extensive damage to the building.
Residents were not home at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported.
