AUBURN — A building near Barker Mill Arms on Mill Street went up in flames late Thursday night.
The building, described as a gatehouse, was said to be fully engulfed in flames when fire crews were called there at about 10:40 p.m.
There were no early reports of injury. A neighbor said the building contained equipment used to operate the dam on the Little Androscoggin River.
Fire crews were battling the blaze at about 11 p.m., although the fire was mostly out and firefighters were mainly dousing hot spots.
Barker Mill Arms, at 143 Mill St. is a senior housing complex. The flames did not damage the complex, a witness said.
Once the blaze was out, fire crews on ladders checked the roofs of nearby buildings to make sure flying embers had not ignited additional fires.
There was no immediate report on cause. One neighbor said the trail next to the building that burned is often used by homeless people passing through the area.
Auburn fire officials were expected to begin an an investigation once the fire was out.
