BRIDGTON — The Molly Ockett Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution recently recognized students at area schools with DAR Good Citizen Awards, DAR Youth Citizenship Medals, and a Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps medal.
The DAR is a lineage-based women’s service organization that promotes historic preservation, education and patriotism, according to a news release from the DAR chapter.
Five high school seniors were named DAR Good Citizens because they demonstrate the characteristics of dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism to an outstanding degree. Selected by their respective schools for the honor were Emily Cummings of Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School in South Paris, Matthew Cummings of Sacopee Valley High School in Hiram, Rose Elsaesser of Lake Region High School in Naples, Kayleigh Flaherty of Oak Hill High School in Wales, and Kayden Haylock of Buckfield Junior-Senior High School in Buckfield.
Each honoree received a certificate and lapel pin. Students who entered the scholarship portion of the contest received a monetary award.
Two eighth graders, Alexza Dunham and Jimmy Tedeschi, of Oxford Hills Middle School in South Paris, were awarded DAR Youth Citizenship Medals and accompanying certificate of award. The DAR Youth Citizenship Medal is awarded to students in grades five through 11 who fulfill the qualities of honor, service, courage, leadership and patriotism.
Hailee Butterworth of Sacopee Valley High School in Hiram was awarded the DAR Bronze ROTC medal. Butterworth was selected for this award for her demonstrated loyalty and patriotism and her record of military and scholastic achievement as a member of the school’s Junior ROTC program.
“It is always a pleasure to recognize the incredibly accomplished students who have received DAR awards,” said Molly Ockett Chapter Regent Susan T. Smith. “These students not only have attained the highest level of academic achievement, but they have also worked to make their schools and communities better places. It gives one great faith in the future of our country.”
Schools that would like to recognize outstanding students with DAR awards are encouraged to email the chapter at lakeregiondar@gmail.com.
The chapter serves the Lake Region of Maine. Recent projects include writing thank-you notes, and donating lap blankets and about 800 blank cards for the use of residents of Maine Veterans’ Home in South Paris. The chapter will continue its participation in the project to clean gravestones in the Naples Village Cemetery this summer.
