LEWISTON — In response to severe vandalism last month, Lewiston Public Schools is planning to host a community beautification day from noon to 4 p.m. Thursday at Gov. James B. Longley School.

Volunteers are expected to help repaint the school, tidy up the flower beds and perform other tasks, according to a memorandum from the district.

School officials heard from many residents and school staff members willing to help repair the school at 145 Birch St. after four children broke in and destroyed furniture, appliances, computers and more. Floors and walls were also splattered with paint.

The four children – a 10-year-old, two 12-year-olds and a 14-year-old – were charged with burglary and aggravated criminal mischief, both felony-level offenses.

Cleanup efforts at the school have been ongoing since the June 19 incident.

“We are so grateful to all who have supported efforts at Longley this summer, and to all who have reached out in support,” the memorandum reads.

Longley School is home to Lewiston’s adult education program and NextSTEP, a middle and high school program created in partnership with Tree Street Youth.
