Skippyjon Jones and the Big Bones
By Judy Schachner
Skippyjon digs up some bones in his neighbor’s garden, and has the bright idea of adding them to his ‘Skipposaurus’ model. His mom encourages him to return them to where he dug them up since they belong to the dog next door, but that’s not what Skippyjon has in mind. He’s all about grand adventures. In this adventure, there’s a jungle in his closet, and his (imaginary) buddies (or amigos, Los Chimichangos) await his company.
The imagination is strong with this one! These stories are great fun to read. The phrases Judy Schachner has Skippyjon use are enough to crack adults up and keep it fun for the listeners. He usually learns some sort of lesson through the story, but not so that it takes anything away – Shachner even keeps the rhyme going throughout the book!
If you’ve read any of the previous books about Skippyjon Jones, you know what a silly character he is. Skippyjon is a Siamese cat who likes to pretend he’s a Chihuahua…and a Mexican one. There’s usually a short rhyme-song, and a time when Skippyjon bounces on his big-boy bed so that he can see himself in the mirror. He uses some Spanish and some ‘Spanglish’ (combining English and Spanish words), so bonus if you can speak Spanish! This is a fun read-aloud with children and will keep them laughing. I read this with young friends every chance I get!
