‘Night at the Fair’ pictures and words by Donald Crews

This picture book is ‘an oldie’, but Crews’s illustrations capture the busyness of every fair. This would be a great picture book to read in preparation for a trip to the fair, actually. Bright pictures, busy with people eating, talking, waiting, riding, playing, watching, and so on. There isn’t a storyline, per se; however, this is a great discussion book, which can be used to interest a hesitant reader and get him or her excited about telling their own story. There’s a lot going on in the illustrations, and I appreciate that Crews kept the text simple.

It’s almost fair season, too! This picture book reminds us of the magic surrounding a local fair. It mentions food, games, prizes, and rides. I think the one thing I always enjoy seeing that is missing from this book is animals, but maybe every local fair doesn’t include animals. What are you looking forward to at the fair?
