NORWAY — The Enid Dullea Length of Lake Swim will take place Sunday, August 21. The Swim celebrates the joy of swimming outdoors and honors Enid Dullea, a Norway native who swam the full length of Lake Pennesseewassee, and sometimes back again, every summer day while training for the 1936 Olympics.
The non-competitive Swim is the only fundraiser for the Lakes Association of Norway (LAON) whose mission is to keep area lakes clean and swimmable. The swim is a 2.85 mile loop from Pennesseewassee Park beach, around the southernmost island, and back to the beach. The deadline for registration is Friday, August 19. Two and three-person teams are welcome.
The Swim starts at 8:00 am, weather permitting. Every swimmer must have an accompanying canoeist or kayaker and wear a visible float. Safety boats will be placed around the whole course and will be identified with a Lakes Association banner. A safety pontoon boat will be stationed at the farthest point of the loop for guidance and resting if necessary.
A suggested $20 donation benefits LAON which maintains several programs to protect area lakes from the greatest threats: invasive species and erosion. A major program of LOAN is the collection of samples between May and September to monitor the water quality of the Norway lakes including Hobbs Pond, Sand Pond, and North Pond. In 2020, LOAN completed a massive survey of erosion sites around Lake Pennesseewassee, developed a multi-phase 10-year mitigation plan, and secured a federal grant with funds to be matched by road associations and property owners. More information about LAON’s programs can be found at www.norwaylakes.org.
