WINSLOW — A Palmyra man is behind bars charged with Class A robbery and other crimes after he allegedly assaulted and robbed a man at gunpoint last weekend in a driveway on Abbott Road, police said Wednesday.
Winslow police Chief Leonard Macdaid said in a news release that Dustin Smith, 30, was arrested by State Police at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at his workplace in Waterville and taken to the Winslow Police Department to be processed. Winslow police drove Smith to Kennebec County jail in Augusta where his bail was $13,500 cash.
Winslow police were notified at about 6 p.m. Sunday of an armed robbery that had just occurred on Abbott Road, according to Macdaid. The suspect was reported to have left the scene in a vehicle prior to officers’ arrival, he said.
The victim, suspect and a female all arrived at the driveway at the same time, the release said.
“The suspect pointed a handgun at the victim and ordered him out of the car,” it said. “Once outside of the vehicle, the suspect had the victim remove his clothing. He then fired the weapon and assaulted him causing facial injuries. The suspect left with an undisclosed amount of cash. The victim was transported to Inland Hospital in Waterville for his injuries. He was released that night.”
Besides Class A armed robbery, Smith was charged with Class B theft, Class C reckless conduct, Class B aggravated assault and Class C criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon, according to Macdaid.
Asked in an email whether the victim was shot, Macdaid said he was not shot, but he was struck in the face.
It is not clear whether the female involved was with the victim or Smith at the time of the robbery. Macdaid said he was “not saying too much about female at this point.”
He said the robbery-assault was an isolated incident and others are not in danger. Abbott Road runs between Albion Road and state Route 137.
