OTISFIELD — The town of Otisfield is developing a community recreation space at its municipal headquarters at 403 Oxford Road.
Site work has started on the first phase, with an expected completion in time for summer in 2023.
The project is being funded without any taxpayer contribution.
“The idea to transform the area behind the town office for use of community has been around for decades,” Otisfield Rec Director Molly Bielby said in an email statement. “Most recently we formed a committee to research and move the issue forward, working with Selectman Rick Micklon on options, cost, time frames, necessities, and formed a plan of action. The plan was then passed by The Board of Selectmen.”
“We have utilized a $90,000 American Rescue Plan Act grant and another $80,000 from tax acquired property. We may fund-raise at some point if the need is determined.”
This space will consist of a pickle ball/basketball court, a gazebo stage, playground, public restroom, a lawn area for general use, backstop and plenty of seating. Excavation is currently being done for the courts, walking path and the playground area. The playground and sporting equipment is expected to by delivered later this fall.
When completed, the recreation space will include a gazebo with stage for performances and gatherings. Bielby said community plans include hosting movie nights, live music and town picnics as well as seasonal activities like Easter egg hunts and a winter carnival.
Starting next summer when the playground and court is completed the park will be open to the public from 8 a.m. until sundown.
Anyone interested in tracking the progress of the project is invited to review selectmen’s meeting minutes available online at https://www.otisfieldme.gov/.
