100 Years Ago: 1922
One of the interesting establishments in Lewiston, and one known all over the country, is the T. J. Murphy hat and fur store on Lisbon Street, with branches on Ash Street, where raw furs from all over Maine, Canada and other points are handled. Mr. Murphy has dealt in this business for a great many years and has seen a rapid growth during the past few winters, since fur coats have been worn so commonly.
50 Years Ago: 1972
The cornerstone of the new Lewiston National Guard Armory and U.S. Army Reserve center was laid yesterday at the Goddard and Cottage Roads site.
The armory is the first to be built to be shared by the Army Reserve and the National Guard in Maine, according to Major General Edwin W. Heywood, Maine Adjutant General and is one of few such joint facilities in the country.
The joint setting of the cornerstone by Major General Heywood, Colonel Nicholas L. Caraganis, former commanding officer 76th Committee Group, U.S. Army Reserve, and Mayor Robert W. Clifford. City of Lewiston, symbolizes the close work and cooperation between the city, and Maine National Guard resulting in the building of the first new joint reserve facility in the state.
25 Years Ago: 1997
The Auburn Police Department is distributing free police trading cards at the Auburn Police Station. On this week’s card is Chief Robert T. Tiner Jr., a 33-year veteran of the force. Auburn Police Department members will give cards during activities at library, school and lunch programs.
