Someone, apparently not an animal lover, abandoned several kittens in rural Auburn early this morning. It was after midnight that Lt. Robert T. Tiner, Jr. while cruising in the Poland Spring Road area near the entrance to the SPCA shelter, discovered six little kittens running all over the roadway.

Lt. Tiner noted the weather was pretty chilly and he rounded up the cats and turned them over to Reserve Officer David Nattress who took them to the SPCA shelter.

The fourth annual Pownal Pumpkin Festival takes place Saturday from 9 am. to 4 pm at Mallett Hall, Route 9. Participants will be treated to an open house of the newly roofed and sided addition to Mallett Hall. The addition will house town offices and records.

Mallett Hall is the seat of the government and town social center, built in 1886 and on the National Register of Historic Buildings. Prior to the new addition, it has seen little change since 1886 except for adding electricity and heat. Some town officers still work from their homes. A town appointed committee is overseeing the project. To date the exterior is complete with more than $60,000 in donations raised and more than 1,000 hours of volunteer labor given.

Money must now be raised to complete the interior parts of the addition. To that end, an old- fashioned country auction will be held at the festival from noon to 2 p.m. in Mallett Hall. This auction will feature furniture, farm implements, antiques, old tools and craft items. A catalog will be available and previewing will begin at 11 a.m.

Making its first appearance will be the 1878 newly-restored horse drawn town hearse. Members of the Pownal Scenic and Historical Society spent 250 volunteer hours restoring the hearse.

The material used in Looking Back is produced exactly as it originally appeared although misspellings and errors may be corrected.
