To the Editor:
I would like to begin by quoting an excerpt from Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address: “Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure.”
Since the beginning of time, civilizations and cultures have been born, grown into powerful forces and then crumbled from the very same influence we are facing today right here in Oxford County and in the entire known world: That being the destructive influence of the gay & lesbian culture on society and indeed its leaders.
In the Victorian era (1800’s) the European continent, including the British Isles, was undergoing a sociological awakening to the ill effects of social inequity; that being a non-mandated caste system subjected on society based on one’s wealth and social position in the community.
In Germany, the social philosopher Immanuel Kant (1724-1804), proposed an ethical theory entitled “A Categorical Imperative”. This theory employed the universal ethical principle stating that one should always respect the humanity in others and that one should only act in accordance with rules that could hold for everyone; A universal moral law.
In the country of Great Britain an English social reformer, Jeremy Bentham (1748-1832), coined the term “utilitarianism” which was based on the view, “…that the morally right action is the one that produces the greatest good for the greatest number of people.
A famous author, Charles Dickens (1812-1870), published many books based on this same premise of social inequity, one of which was almost biographical, “Oliver Twist”. Charles was influenced by a sojourn in the workhouses of Britian because of his father’s indebtedness, and it was because of this that he saw the deplorable conditions that those who were sick, indigent, orphans and elderly had to live in.
I preface my comment of concern with these historical facts because they too were faced with a cultural dilemma; that being, “Our society is in utter chaos and our values are deplorable!”
The book of Proverbs in the Old Testament of the Bible, was written to give the Leaders of the fledgling society called “The Children of Israel” a guideline to both teach and nurture their people toward a peaceful and successful life. Solomon is accredited with most of these words of wisdom knowing full well that people would be tempted by anger, immorality, envy and greed so we have these scriptures to enlighten us as to the enumerable forces at work in everyone’s life.
As the leaders of our education system in Oxford County, I implore you to implement the gifts of discretion (the ability to know the difference between right & wrong), and discernment, (the ability to make correct choices) as you assess the import of your decision.
I leave you by putting forth this one question:
Why are we considering allowing the few confused & questioning children of our society, those whose hormones are understandably driving them crazy, dictate the course of action we should take in restructuring the atmosphere in which our children are to safely develop into the society of tomorrow?
