Mike Small makes a wreath Nov. 10 at his business, Small’s Plantcare at 726 Summer St. in Auburn. Strong demand for his poinsettias has created a tight supply, which is made more critical by Whiting Farms’ having closed next door and fewer people growing because of the increasing cost of materials and, especially, fuel to heat greenhouses. Small says he is considering whether it will be worth growing next year after more than 40 years growing the traditional holiday plant.
