LEWISTON — Police are taking applications for this year’s Community Police Academy slated to begin March 1.

The academy provides an inside look at the day-to-day operations of the department.

“This is a unique opportunity to engage with the department,” according to a news release, “and to be informed on the services we provide, to discuss current issues taking place both within Lewiston, Maine, and out, and to ask questions related to law enforcement.”

The 10-week program starts March 1 and ends May 3. Classes meet once a week from 6 to 8 p.m.

During this program, students will speak with several members of the Police Department, including the chief, current and former officers and representatives from the Androscoggin District Attorney’s Office. Also, participants will tour the Androscoggin County Jail, Lewiston/Auburn Communication Center and Central Maine Community College’s Criminal Justice program.

Lewiston police consider the Community Police Academy a “great opportunity to maintain a strong and open relationship with the community we serve,” the release said.

Applications are available in the department’s lobby at 171 Park St. or can be emailed. For more information, contact Officer Travys Fecteau at tfecteau@lewistonmaine.gov (preferred) or call 513-3010
