The Maine High School Girls Hockey Association on Friday announced five finalists for the Becky Schaffer Award, presented to the state’s top high school senior in girls’ hockey.
The finalists are: Sadie Carnes, a forward for Yarmouth/Freeport; Kathryn Brower, a goalie for the York co-op team; Delaney Whitten, a defenseman for Cape Elizabeth/Waynflete/South Portland; Emma Michaud, a goalie for the Winslow/Gardiner co-op team; and Emma McNeil, a forward for the Penobscot co-op team.
The award winner will be announced at the senior all-star game on Feb. 28 at Family Ice Arena in Falmouth. Faceoff is set for 7:30 p.m. All-state teams also will be announced.
Now in its sixth season, the award is named in honor of Becky Schaffer, a 2006 graduate of Yarmouth High who was the leading scorer for the Clippers girls’ club team while also playing for the boys’ varsity team as a junior and senior. Schaffer attended McGill University in Montreal, where she played club hockey. While teaching in Micronesia in 2011, Schaffer died in a hiking accident at age 23.
