University of New England women’s hockey defenseman Avery Lutrzykowski was named to the Commonwealth Coast Conference all-conference second team Tuesday.

The senior from Winthrop, a St. Dominic Academy grad, earned all-conference honors for the first time in her career. She compiled career highs in goals (three) and points (11) while playing in all 27 games for the Nor’easters.

COLLEGE SOFTBALL
SHIELDS, DAY NAMED CAPTAINS FOR USM: Buckfield grad Hannah Shields and Oxford Hills grad Madison Day have both been named captains for the University of Southern Maine softball team this season.

Shields, a senior outfielder, sports a perfect fielding percentage in her career, to go along with a .263 career batting average (54 hits in 205 at-bats).

Day, a junior shortstop, is a career .335 hitter (84 hits in 251 at-bats), with 20 career doubles and 44 RBIs. Making 78 career starts at shortstop, she has collected 125 putouts and 172 assists.

The Huskies’ other captains are graduate student Lauren Miller, senior Rona Scott and junior Belle Snyder.

“Each of these women have demonstrated their leadership both on and off of the field of competition,” USM head coach Sarah Jamo said in a press release announcing the captains. “Accomplished in the classroom and in the community, all five are standouts in their respective position — something they have each achieved through their hard work, dedication and commitment to their individual and team goals.”

COLLEGE INDOOR TRACK
JALBERT, BARNES NAMED ALL-REGION: Edward Little grad Olivia Jalbert and Gray-New Gloucester grad Zoe Barnes both earned All-Region honors from the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches’ Association for their performances with the University of Southern Maine women’s team.

The top five individuals in each event from each region earned All-Region distinction, in addition to each member of the region’s top three relay teams, according to a press release announcing the honors.

Jalbert, a junior who was named the Little East Conference Field Athlete of the Year after winning the high jump and long jump at the conference championships, earned All-Region honors in both events. Her season-best mark in the high jump was 1.61 meters and tied for third in the region, while her best long jump distance of 5.27 meters was fifth in the East region.

Barnes, a sophomore, recorded the second-best shot put distance in the region with a toss of 12.84 meters at the New England Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships.

RICHARDSON HEADLINES BATES WOMEN’S ALL-REGION HONOREES: Auburn native Jillian Richardson, who will be competing at the NCAA Division III national championships in the 3,000-meter run, earned USTFCCCA All-Region honors in that event, as well as the 5,000.

Two other Bates women’s team members earned All-Region honors. Fellow senior Abbey Otterbein received the honor for her performance in the pentathlon, and freshman Moriah Scharn made the All-Region list with her season-best mark in the 60-meter hurdles (8.97 seconds).

NINE BATES MEN EARN USTFCCCA HONORS: Five members of the Bates men’s team also made the All-Region list.

Headlining the Bobcats’ honorees are throwers Liam Byrne and Jacob Goff, who received honors in both the weight throw and shot put. Fellow thrower James Guinee also earned All-Region distinction in the weight throw.

Derek Shen (60-meter dash) and Colby Stakun-Pickering (200 dash) each claimed All-Region honors in sprint events.

The Bates Distance Medley Relay team also earned All-Region recognition. Sophomore Aidan Rooney, senior Peter Ackley, freshman Jackson Monz and junior Ned Farrington ran the ninth-fastest time in program history (9:59.32) at the NCAA Division III New England Championships.
