MEN’S BASKETBALL
GEORGETOWN: Patrick Ewing was fired as coach after the latest in a series of rough seasons at the school he led to a national championship as a player in the 1980s.
Ewing was never a head coach at any level before getting the job with the Hoyas in 2017, and he leaves after a half-dozen years with a record of 75-109. His last game was an 80-48 loss to Villanova on Wednesday night in the first round of the Big East Tournament.
Georgetown went 7-25 this season, including 2-18 in regular-season conference play, capped by a 40-point loss to Creighton.
(2) UCLA 80, COLORADO 69: Freshman Amari Bailey scored a season-high 26 points as the Bruins (28-4) beat the Buffaloes (17-16) in the Pac-12 quarterfinals in Las Vegas.
Bailey eclipsed his previous high of 24 points on Feb. 9 at Oregon State. Tyger Campbell scored 18 points, Jaime Jaquez Jr. had 16, and Adem Bona totaled 11 points and 10 rebounds.
(3) KANSAS 75, WEST VIRGINIA 61: Playing without their ailing coach, Bill Self, the Jayhawks (26-6) turned to big offensive performances from Jalen Wilson and Dajuan Harris Jr. along with some stingy defense to pull away from the Mountaineers (19-14) in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Tournament at Kansas City, Missouri.
Wilson had 22 points and 11 rebounds, and Harris had 13 points with eight assists.
Kansas announced that Self will miss the Big 12 Tournament after going to the emergency room Wednesday night for what doctors called “a standard procedure,” and it’s uncertain whether he will be back for the NCAA Tournament.
Dr. Steve Stites, the chief medical officer at the University of Kansas Health System, said Self did not have a heart attack, which some outlets had reported, but that he remained a patient Thursday. Stites did not describe the nature or extent of the procedure, though Self is expected to make a full recovery.
(6) MARQUETTE 72, ST. JOHN’S 70: Tyler Kolek scored all 19 of his points after halftime, including the tiebreaking free throws with 15.8 seconds left in overtime, and the Golden Eagles (26-6) rallied for a victory over scrappy St. John’s in the Big East quarterfinals at New York.
The Golden Eagles trailed by 14 late in the first half and had to turn their defensive intensity way up to avoid an upset. Marquette will face UConn in Friday’s semifinals.
IOWA STATE 78, (10) BAYLOR 72: Gabe Kalscheur hit six 3-pointers and scored 24 points, helping the fifth-seeded Cyclones (19-12) overcome a spectacular performance by Baylor forward Jalen Bridges in the Big 12 quarterfinals in Kansas City, Missouri.
Bridges was 10 of 11 from the field and 6 of 6 from beyond the arc en route to a career-high 28 points for the fourth-seeded Bears (22-10).
(11) UCONN 73, PROVIDENCE 66: Jordan Hawkins scored 19 points and the Huskies (25-7) held off a furious second-half rally to beat the Flyers (21-11) in a Big East quarterfinal in New York.
Playing in front of a packed house heavy on Huskies fans, UConn led by 26 with 12:30 left.
(14) MIAMI 74, WAKE FOREST 72: Jordan Miller had 18 points and nine rebounds for the Hurricanes (25-6), who withstood a second-half comeback by Wake Forest (19-17) in an Atlantic Coast Conference quarterfinal at Greensboro, North Carolina.
Tyree Appleby scored 24 points for Wake Forest, which fell just short in rallying from an 18-point deficit.
Miami, the No. 1 seed, will play Duke in Friday’s semifinals.
(17) TENNESSEE 70, MISSISSIPPI 55: Josiah-Jordan James had game-highs of 20 points and seven rebounds, leading the Volunteers (23-9) past the Rebels (12-21) in an SEC quarterfinal in Nashville, Tennessee.

The Monks scored all their runs in the second inning.
