GREENSBORO, N.C. — The Bates College swim teams added a couple more All-American performances at the third day of the NCAA Division III championships Friday.
Augusta’s Nathan Berry earned his fourth All-America honor this week by placing fifth in the men’s 100-yard backstroke.
Sophie Cassily also earned her fourth All-American this week by finishing 10th in the women’s 100 backstroke.
The top 16 finishes in each event earn All-American honors. The top eight are first-team All-Americans.
Bates’ Abigail Gibbons fell one spot short by placing 17th in the women’s 100 breaststroke.
Other Bobcats results Friday: Nate Sommer took 24th in 100 breast, the women’s 800 freestyle relay placed 18th and the men’s 800 free relay team placed 19th.
MEN’S LACROSSE
AMHERST 15, BATES 8: Jake Bennett had four goals and three assists as the Mammoths (2-1, 2-1 NESCAC) dominated the Bobcats (0-4, 0-3) in Owings Mills, Maryland.
Jake Johnson scored three goals, and Malcolm Klingbeil and Denzel Evans each finished with two for Bates.
SOFTBALL
CMCC SPLITS PAIR: The Mustangs’ (14-4) defeated Monroe Community College 8-4 and lost to Delaware Technical Community College 11-0 in their final day in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
Emily Wormwood got Central Maine’s offense going against Monroe, singling home two runs in the first inning. The Mustangs then added three more in the fourth on RBIs by Sarah Poli and McKenna Ridlon.
CMCC finished with 14 hits, including three by Poli. Wormwood, Alyvia Perreault and Paige Ouellette had two hits apiece, and Sage Cormier, Olivia Scott and Emily Sanfacon each had one.
Riley McNamara earned the win from the circle for the Mustangs, striking out five and allowing four hits and two runs in two innings.
Against Delaware Tech, pitcher Kinley Elliot held CMCC scoreless and earned the win.
Perreault, Cormier and Olivia Scott each had a hit for the Mustangs.
BASEBALL
MAINE 2, UMBC 1: Quinn McDaniel’s two-run homer to left in the ninth inning lifted the Black Bears (5-10, 1-0 America East) over the Retrievers (6-7, 0-1) in Baltimore.
Maine starter Colin Fitzgerald allowed just one hit and two walks over seven innings while striking out seven. Caleb Leys got the win after pitching a scoreless eighth, and Justin Baeyens earned the save despite giving up a home run in the bottom of the ninth.
SOFTBALL
SOUTHERN MAINE 6, HAMLINE 1: Ella Bezanson and Rona Scott each had a pair of RBI, and Lauren Merrill, an Oxford Hills graduate, and Belle Snyder combined on a three-hitter as the Huskies (2-5) handled the Pipers (6-4-1) in Kissimmee, Florida.
Bezanson hit a two-run double in the fifth inning for a 5-0 lead. Scott drove in a run on a fielder’s choice in the first and hit a solo homer in the fifth. Madison Day, another former Oxford Hills standout, added two hits, an RBI and a run scored.
