A name of a place reflects not only an identity but a heritage. A name of a place can hold much cultural, emotional and historical significance to its community.
Carl Sheline’s March 18 letter, “Center’s name should represent legacy of Francos,” shared the same sentiment. Many other heartfelt letters also related the same concerns.
The personal, cultural, historical connections of Francos to St. Mary’s Church are numerous, as various letters substantiated. The church played a vital role in the lives of French Canadians.
Although the intent behind the Franco Center’s name change may not have been to minimize the French culture, the name change certainly had that impact.
Maybe now it’s time to reconsider the name change and allow the name to truly reflect the Franco American heritage and culture.
