Mary Sinclair has been hired as the next field hockey coach at University of Maine at Farmington, athletic director Jamie Beaudoin announced in a news release Tuesday.

Sinclair, a 2006 graduate of UMaine-Farmington, replaces Hattie Huston, who was the interim coach during the 2022 season. Sinclair was an assistant to Huston last season, when the Beavers went 1-13.

Huston, a 2011 UMaine-Farmington graduate and former Beavers assistant, took over on an interim basis after the departure of Cyndi Pratt, who led the program from 2004-21 before becoming the athletic director at Mt. Blue High School last year.

“UMF field hockey is in a transition, and I look forward to being able to bridge the history with the future successes of this program,” Sinclair said in the news release.

Sinclair played in four conference championship games during her UMaine-Farmington playing career, which included the Beavers winning three straight North Atlantic Conference titles from 2002-04. She was named to the all-tournament team each of those three championship seasons and was the tournament MVP in 2004.

Sinclair credits her former UMaine-Farmington coaches, Beth Evans and Pratt, for helping shape her coaching career.

“Beth and Cyndi inspired me and taught me how to be a leader and a coach,” she said. “My teammates and the experiences we went through together taught me how to push each other, trust each other, and learn from each other. I learned life lessons that I know I never could have experienced on my own, and I developed an understanding of what it felt like to be part of something important.”

Sinclair’s previous coaching experience includes leading the junior varsity team at Mt. Blue in 2013-14, as well as coaching the Cougars program during the winter and tournament seasons from 2015-19. She has also worked with the university’s Upward Bound program for the past 10 years.

“We are excited to welcome Mary back into UMF Athletics,” Beaudoin said in the release. “Mary brings a wealth of knowledge to our department and is passionate about the rich history of our field hockey program. She will be a great leader for our student-athletes as our field hockey program returns to compete in the North Atlantic Conference in 2023.”
