MEXICO — A local man was charged with possessing fentanyl Tuesday after police and drug agents searched his apartment at 54 Roxbury Road and found such filth that the three-story building was immediately condemned, according to police.
James D. Harris, 50, was arrested at about 7 a.m. when Mexico and Rumford police, the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office, and Maine Drug Enforcement Agency personnel converged on a third-floor apartment with a search warrant.
They seized about 1,390 milligrams of fentanyl and an assortment of illegally possessed prescription drugs from the apartment, according to a news release from Rumford police, who assisted Mexico.
Harris was charged with felony possession of more than 200 milligrams of fentanyl powder.
Because of the feces, used hypodermic needles and other hazards prevalent, police kept Rumford’s K-9 Niko out of the apartment for fear of injury and exposure.
Mexico’s code enforcement officer came to the scene and deemed the building unsafe due to the uninhabitable living conditions and condemned it.
Electricity to the entire building was cut by the utility company hours earlier.
Two dogs were rescued by Mexico Animal Control.
The case remains under investigation.
