LISBON — Lisbon was itching to cut loose after building six-run lead by the third inning of a Mountain Valley Conference softball game on Friday.
The Greyhounds unloaded on Wiscasset/Boothbay, hammering out 11 runs in the third and adding eight more in the fourth to cruise to a 24-2 victory.
Lisbon reeled of 20 hits and made three errors. Wiscasset had three hits and made nine errors.
But Lisbon coach Nikki Austin insisted this wasn’t an easy outing for her Greyhounds at the plate against Wiscasset pitcher Makayla Bush.
“It hard to hit a pitcher like that when you have been hitting really fast pitchers,” Austin said. “It was a struggle for them, probably in the first and second (innings), then they timed it up and did well.”
Lisbon (2-0) got to the Wolverines (0-4) as early in the contest.
Elle Burkehart reached base in the first inning when she was hit by a pitch and moved to third on Brooke Norman’s single. Burkehart scored on a passed ball, and Norman eventually came home on Alivia Field’s RBI single. Field scored Lisbon’s third run with help from Maria Levesque’s RBI single.
While Amelia Harvey, the winning pitcher who only gave three hits, was keeping Wiscasset off balance at the plate, the ‘Hounds collected three more runs in the second inning. Emily Libby’s two-run single and another RBI single by Harvey provided Lisbon with a comfortable 6-0 lead.
Libby led the Greyhounds with four hits, two doubles and eight RBIs. Norman, Sophia Bowie and Harvey all had three hits and three RBIs. Tiana Seaborne added two hits and a pair of RBIs. Norman and Bowie were also credited with a double apiece.
The Greyhounds then erupted for 11 runs in the third, highlighted by Bowie’s three-run double. They used their hitting, base running and an error and walks to build a 17-0 lead.
The fourth inning was another seven-run blitz, but by then Lisbon was using much of its JV contingent to get the job done.
“We looked at their box scores prior, and other games; we were like, we are not making this hard for them,” Austin said. “We put in our JV in. …
“It is kind of nice when everybody gets to play because that doesn’t happen very often. Our team work is probably our biggest asset right now.”
Wiscasset did get two runs in the bottom of the fourth when freshman Sara Applebee and sophomore Anna Strozier scored.
“We are a brand new program,” Wiscasset coach Chelsea Taylor said. “This is the first time that Wiscasset has played at the varsity level in like five years. So none of these girls have played at this level. So my goals for this season are just to learn some stuff and get better, and we are growing our program.
“I was happy with their performance and learning some stuff and scoring a couple of runs.”
