100 Years Ago: 1923
Bob Ouellette of the Androscoggin Bass Masters organization picks up trash along the outlet-of Lake Auburn Saturday morning. More than 20 members of the club braved heavy rain to help out with the annual cleanup, which the group has done for eight years.
50 Years Ago: 1973
In an unusual move, the Lewiston-Auburn Art and Literature Club is opening its next meeting. Monday, May 7, to the public. The reason is that the club feels it will have such an interesting speaker in White Nichols of Wiscasset, president of the Arnold Expedition Historical Society.
Mr. Nichols will talk about the now-famous trail followed by Major Arnold and his 1100-man army on his expedition to Quebec in 1775, and will illustrate his talk with slides he has taken along the route of the trail. The march started at Fort Popham and continued north through the Maine wilderness, with the men suffering many obstacles, and hardships, and many dying from exhaustion, freezing weather and starvation.
The meeting on Monday will open with a luncheon at 12:30 at Holiday Inn in Auburn, and anyone interested is welcome to attend. Luncheon reservations may be made by Saturday, May 5, with Mrs. Fred H. Awalt of Grandview Ave., Auburn. Those who might wish to be present for the lecture only, at no charge, are also asked to contact Mrs. Awalt in order that sufficient seating arrangements may be made.
25 Years Ago: 1998
A Great Whatever Auction will be held at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, at Academy Hill School. Auction items include gift certificates from area stores and restaurants, new and old items and whatever else turns up. A free dessert smorgasbord is also available. Sponsored by the Wilton Scholarship Foundation. To have items picked up, call Ken Sawyer.
